Universal music group emailed me back asking me to fill out a license request, however this was only for people from the US or Canada. Therefore, I had to find the UK email address for Universal music group and resend my email.

Weekly Blog

Week 2- This week I sent an email to Universal Music Group to ask for copyright permission to use the song 'Weathered' by Jack Garratt. If I did not email them asking for copyright permission, I would not be able to use the song without potentially getting in serious trouble with the copyright holder.

I am a Media Studies A-Level student from Brixham College. As part of my Media Coursework, I have to create a music video using music from a contemporary artist.  
Therefore, I am writing to you to seek copyright permission for the use of 'Weathered' by Jack Garratt. This music video would purely be used for educational purposes as part of my Media course.  
The music video would be uploaded to a blog (blogger.com) which would be viewed by my teacher and the examiner however, the public can also access my blog. 
If required, I can include a full copyright notice in both the planning and the music video itself. The artist and copyright holder will receive full recognition throughout the production and evaluation of my video.

Music Video Analysis

Want To Want Me- Jason Derulo



This music video is a narrative music video as it tells a story. According to Goodwin's theory, it is important for the artist to play a role in the video as the audience feel more involved with the artist. Jason Derulo also performs in the video to make it more realistic and to make the audience feel more involved.

In one scene, Derulo sings 'in the back of the cab' and the camera focuses on Derulo sitting in the back of a taxi, this is done to show a link between the lyrics and the visuals which Goodwin said was a key element to making a music video. This is done to reflect and reinforce the meaning of the lyrics and to help the audience understand them.

This music video reflects the conventions of a pop music video as it uses bright colours, uses young people, fashionable, features elements of love, uses performance. This is all done to attract the target audience as pop music generally has a target audience of young teenagers therefore the video needs to appeal to a younger audience. This is done through fashion, bright colours, using characters of a young age and using performance to keep the video interesting.
The notion of looking is used in this music video to get the artist to 'draw' the audience in by looking seductive, This is done by looking directly into the camera to create a link between the artist and the audience. The artist generally gazes into the camera during the performance part of the video to make the audience feel more involved. 

Voyeurism is also used in this video to lure the audience in through the female sex appeal. This is very popular in pop music videos as it appeals to the younger male generation.
 Overall, this video supports Goodwin's theory as it uses the genre characteristics, it uses the notion of looking and voyeurism, the lyrics and visuals match, and the music and visuals match as the cutting speed matches the beat of the song.

Bad Blood- Taylor Swift

This music video is a narrative video as Taylor Swift stars as the main character in the music video. According to Goodwin's music video theory, it is important for the main artist to play a key role in the music video as it makes the video more realistic and allows the audience to have a better understanding of the lyrics. The song is about a feud that Swift had with another female artist (rumored to be Katy Perry) and this is reflected in the video as there is a feud between two girls (Taylor plays one of them).


During this video, there are many scenes when Taylor is fighting with another character, most of these scenes are showed whilst the lyrics 'Cause baby now we got bad blood' are played. This shows that this video is illustrative as it represents that the two characters do not get along and have "bad blood" therefore the visuals and the lyrics match which reinforces Goodwin's music video theory. The music and visuals also link together, for example when there is a beat, or a change in the music, the characters guns/weapons are fired.

However, this video goes against one of Goodwin's music video theories. The song is a 'pop' song however the video does not represent the stereotypical genre characteristics of bold, bright colours and partying and instead represents fighting, dark colours and feuds. Although, this music video does use young people therefore it does represent one of the stereotypical pop video conventions.
The notion of looking is also used in this video on many occasions. This is done to reinforce the meaning of the lyrics 'now we got bad blood'. However, it is also done to meet the needs of the record label so the main artist that they are trying to 'sell', gazes into the camera, as if to make a connection with the audience. This is done to make the artist known and recognizable to the audience.



Voyeurism is represented in this video. This is a key feature of pop conventions as it 'lures' the audience in through the artists sex appeal. It is done to represent the 'sex appeal' of women therefore they are expressed in a sexual and seductive way to draw the audience in.

Overall, this music video does support Goodwin's theory of music videos, despite it not representing the stereotypical conventions of a pop video.
